Good day and salutation friends and family. Welcome back to Team Awesome. This day was our first official excursion. The excursion was called “Sugar, Sea & Stone: Antigua’s Historic Treasures”. We left the ship a little after 8:30 and boarded a bus. I was the lucky one, I was able to sit literally in the front sit next to the driver. The driver was easily in his 70s which made the drive a bit funny because he would ask the tour guide which way to go. Our first destination was to the east side of the island to a place called Devil’s bridge. It was a natural coral bridge made by the ocean. I will add pictures. Her only request was that we do not walk across it because it is now cracking. The next stop was to a sugar plantation that now is defunct. It was called “Betty’s Hope”. The stone work is all that is pretty much all that is left. Any wooden structures have all but disappeared. Some archeological work was done on the site in the early 1990’s but not much since. From there went to an Anglican Church. They had just finished service when we arrived. Many of the bricks used for the walls were from the ballast of ships coming from the old world. Some of them were still visable and the ceiling wood work was from two ships. We were told the wood was original to the church. She said it was made from wood called purple wood. It does not rot so it is in good shape. Following a walk through the cemetery we recorded the bus and made our way back to the port. A good day was had by all and we learned a lot about the island of Antigue. Thanks for stopping by and stay awesome. Bye for now.
